Mark Morris, head of sales for managed services at SmartStream Technologies, discusses the demand gap for managed services, how SmartStream distinguishes itself from similar providers in the industry, and how it works to merge the dots between all on-demand solutions.
There is little doubt that the popularity of managed services has grown since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic in the first quarter of 2020. How ready is SmartStream to respond to the increasing number of questions from new and existing customers who are also trying new or additional services from the business? Why is it such a regular business from a SmartStream standpoint?
Mark Morris: I wouldn’t call last year’s variety — and certainly not the early part of last year in Q1 — normal. I think the Covid-19 pandemic hit financial services particularly hard, and I’m much in the sick alert for the extensive long-distance work requirements and impact that will have on some aspects of the trade life cycle, whether in captive organizations or over managed service providers. It really hurt them and caused them to start searching to see who had established processing skills when the pandemic emerged. Smartstream has multisite capability and 24/5 access after the sun, which is one of the things that puts us in a good position. We are such regular business throughout the last year, even in Q1.
SmartStream is not the only managed service provider in the financial services industry. What factors differentiate SmartStream apart from the same providers in that space?
Mark Morris: When financial institutions originally set up their own prisoners or managed service functions, they usually did a “lift and shift”. They do not submit the process to the recipient (outsourcing provider) with any idea to generate profit / savings and inherit advanced technology that is supported by subject matter experts within the domain. With us, they accept all of that. If they are looking for a fully managed service, they hire experts in conciliation, for example, who understand very well SmartStream TLM and our Corona solution, and we immediately start looking at [its] operations every day to understand how we can drive efficiency, the same benefits cost.
We already believe in providing services and we produce key performance indicator packs for our clients where they can review how we and they have performed. Also, with the emergence of many cyber issues that we saw over the past 18-24 months, we offer best class security and all regulatory accreditations that fit with external audits, which are all key aspects for our managed services business.
Where do you find the abundance of demand from now on in terms of the types of capital market companies that seek the support of managed services, and in particular the management services that they seek to consume?
Mark Morris: A lot of our demand starts with a technology role or CIO in a company that can be burdened with expensive datacenters and old kits, and they want to dive a thumbs into the service space that is requested or managed by moving technology functions to us in the cloud. That’s an easy reason for us to do and there are some projects that we have submitted over the past year. In terms of the types of financial institutions that we talk about, they vary tier-one, level two and level-three banks, and broker dealers to several side-by-side companies and insurance companies. In some cases, clients want to go directly to a fully managed service where we run not only the technology but [business processes] throughout the day for them as well. For example, we can finally run the entire risk cycle.
What has SmartStream got from a service standpoint that is managed for years ahead, especially considering the range of middle and back office platforms that sit in its product portfolio? Are there any special concerns that your customers need to know about?
Mark Morris: What we’re looking for — and we’ve started this with two key clients — is to build more collaborative and structured collaborations with more spatial awareness of the entire gamut of what we can provide across multiple SmartStream components versus whatever customer needs.
Seug is usually like this: we do conciliation on demand for clients, which means they get a cleaner cash break, which in turn means they can use our cash management solutions for better forecasts, stress testing and more accurate intraday liquidity management. If they have clean stock — which for sure we can supply demand through machine learning, artificial intelligence and our subject matter experts — that gives cleaner stock records, which means cleaner corporate action and dividends and coupon management, and next year, by presence Central Depository Regulation, there will be a number of security that fail. That’s how we work on merging the dots between our reconciliation solutions, cash management solutions, corporate action solutions and our guarantee management solutions.
