Jig Fishing There seems to be one thing most
Hoosier
anglers do that isn't quite right. That's how they fish a jig. Most fish it
faster than they should. Jigging can produce a nice quantity of bass but it's
main goal is to produce quality bass.
In The Spring Fish brush,
lily pads that are just coming up, boat docks and rocks. Try fishing shallow
water, it warms up fastest. Fish with a 1/2 ounce jig tipped with
pork.
In The Summer Now is when
most anglers go to a faster moving
lure, you should try jigging. Fish creek beds, channels, grass and lily
pads.
In The Fall Try fishing jigs around wood. Logs, stumps, boat
docks and downed trees are good places to fish your jig this time of year. Also
try the lily pads that are dying off.
In The Winter Rivers are
great for winter fishing. Try to find slow moving water in the 3 to 9 foot
range. A heavier jigs like a 3/8 ounce tipped with pork works good. Deep water
can find schools of bass in slow moving water. Jigging can be one of the
best bass producing methods if you fish it slow enough. Keep the jig in front of
the fish, move it very slow and you'll have good results if there are fish to be
caught. By: Charles E. White

Bait: ice jigs tipped with spikes, beemoths or small minnows
Depth: 5-20 feet
Comments about fish:
Some crappie have been caught. Crappie are active at low light.
Bluegill
Bait: Ice jigs tipped with
beemoths, spikes, mousies
Depth: 3-10 feet
Comments about fish:
Bluegill have made
up the majority of the catch with some nice ones being taken. According
to most fishermen, lately the bluegill catch has slowed. Some are still
catching them.
Channel catfish
Bait: jigging minnows or spoons tipped with live bait
Depth: 3-35feet
Comments about fish:
Catfish can suspend in deep water at this time of the year
Largemouth bass
Bait: Ice jigs, jigging minnows or spoons
Depth: 4-20 feet
Comments about fish:
Some bass will be caught on panfish jigs or try using ice fishing minnow jigs.
Redear sunfish
Bait: Ice jigs tipped with
beemoths, spikes, and mousies
Depth: 4-20 feet
Comments about fish:
Redears are making a
comeback after low populations in the last few years. The higher redear
numbers may be due in part to the lower perch numbers.
Walleye
Bait: Ice jigs, jigging minnows or spoons
Depth: 5-35 feet
Comments about fish:
A few walleye have been caught with the majority caught in deeper water.
Yellow perch
Bait: Ice jigs tipped with
beemoths, spikes, wigglers, minnows and small jigs
Depth: 4-35 feet
Comments about fish:
Perch numbers are up
over the recent past when numbers were way down. Red can be a good
color for perch as they eat a lot of bloodworms from the lake bottom in
the winter.
Comments about body of water:
We received about 10 inches of snow this past weekend. Exercise extreme
caution when venturing out onto ice expecially when there is snow which
insulates and hides bad ice. It's wise to always ice fish with a buddy,
let someone know where you'll be, frequently check ice depths and
conditions, carry a throw rope, and carry ice picks, ice awls or
something sharp like 16-penny nails to help grab onto slippery ice in
case of a fall-through. The office is open M-F 8a-4p. 2010 park passes
and lake permits are now on sale at the office. Camp reservations:
