Valparaiso,
Indiana
Lakes Discussion-access and other issues meeting March 16th
Ok, guys, looks like we
are done ice fishing for the season and I'd like to try to gather some
interested guys to talk about access issues and other issues in regard to
the Valpo Lakes. I'd like to call a meeting on March 16th Tuesday at 7pm.
I'm trying to get a DNR Officer to come and meet with us but not sure yet.
We can talk about access issues, stocking issues and other ideas to
improve the fishing on these lakes. We will meet at my church, Liberty
Bible Church, which is at 824 N. Calumet Ave, Chesterton 46304. The church
is located just 1/4 mile north of Rt. 6 on Calumet Ave, between Valparaiso and
Chesterton. We'll meet in our Fireside Room, come to Entrance C to get
that room. Here's my cell if you need directions 219-510-3193. I know
there are a lot of us that enjoy these lakes both open water and through
the ice. And I know we have run into access issues. I think we could
improve things if we work together on it. Who's interested?

Alot of members complained about driving distance and gas prices so we
are just going to keep this kind of local, and just a one day event. We
will be having this at the Martinsville, Indiana city park on May 8th between
the hours of 8 am to 5 pm. Rain date will be May 15th. There is a small fishing pond with lots of bank access. The pond does have some
very big fish in it ! A playgrounds is very nearby so if anyone who has
children, they can have some fun too ! We will provide hamburgers and hot
dogs. Anyone wanting to pitch in a dish for the pitch in diner would be
appreciated by all !! The diner will be at, or around 2 pm. Side dish's, buns,
ice, paper plates, plastic forks & spoons, soda pop, cups, deserts will be
needed. No electric available. This will be a real informal outing, but
due to travel cost we are just keeping it local. If you want to drive here, all
members are welcomed. We will be passing out Angler of Year awards, maybe a few
contest or raffles, maybe both ! We would like to get a good idea of people
who are going to attend. Just gives us a good idea of how many burgers and hot

Salamonie Children's Day Camps, March 23-25 & April 7-9
Children ages 7 to 11 are invited to Salamonie Reservoir's
"Treemendous
Trees" day camps for a fun and exciting three days, March 23 - 25, or April 7 -
9. Each day provides a variety of activities from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Both camps programs are identical to serve more children.
Participants will study trees from crown to roots. They'll learn about
controlled burns, identify trees, meet a DNR forester and learn about his or her
work, come face to face with animals that live in trees, and more. Activities
are both indoors and outdoors, so dress for the weather.
All activities are guided by DNR interpretive naturalists trained to provide
a safe and fun environment. A small snack will be provided, but children need to
bring a sack lunch with a drink each day.
Space is limited. Register by calling (260) 468-2127. The camp costs $45 per
child, with $10 due at registration. Parents must fill out health/participation
forms before their child may begin activities on the first day.
Gate fees are waived for participants.

Outdoor cooking class at

Those who want to improve their skills at doing so will have that opportunity at
Mississinewa Reservoir's outdoor cooking workshop, April 17.
Participants will take part in hands-on instruction, while receiving tips
from the Kokomo Kookers Dutch Oven Cooking Club. To add incentive for doing
well, participants are responsible for cooking their own lunch. Door prizes from
Bozarth Country Store will be given away. After lunch, participants may swap
recipes or make a charcoal starter to use on future meals.
The program begins at 10 a.m. and costs $10 per person. Space is limited.
Register by calling (260) 468-2127.
Park entrance fees of $4 per vehicle for Indiana residents and $7 per vehicle
for non-residents will apply |

small jigs Depth: 4-35 feet
Comments about fish:
Not many perch have been caught.
Comments about body of water:
Ice is going fast. Exercise extreme caution when venturing out onto
ice expecially when there is snow which insulates and hides bad ice. It's wise
to always ice fish with a buddy, let someone know where you'll be, frequently
check ice depths and conditions, carry a throw rope, and carry ice picks, ice
awls or something sharp like 16-penny nails to help grab onto slippery ice in
case of a fall-through. The office is open M-F 8a-4p. 2010 park passes and lake
permits are now on sale at the office. Camp reservations: 866-622-6746 or www.CAMP.IN.gov.

2009 Record Fish and
Fish-of-the-Year honorees
Only one Indiana state-record sized fish was
caught in Indiana in 2009. Paul Huber of Seymour caught a 32.25-inch
bowfin that weighed 16.52 lbs. in Mutton Creek in Jackson County. The
previous state record bowfin was caught in 1988 and weighed 16.0 lbs.
There were 54 entries for 2009
Fish-of-the-Year, of which 27 were accepted. The smallest was a 12-inch
bluegill caught by Abby Byrer of Warsaw in Crystal Lake, and the largest
was a 50-inch muskie caught by Edwin Van Cleave of Chicago in Big Barbee
Lake.
Bill Hudock of Michigan City and Joe Tackett of
Claypool tied for the walleye Fish-of-the-Year, each catching walleyes
measuring 31 inches. Also, Chris Terry of Noblesville caught a
22.75-inch smallmouth bass while fishing a retention pond in Hamilton
County. River fishing accounted for eight of the 27 entries; six came
from Lake Michigan, eight from other lakes, and five from private ponds.
